Couple aurora hunting - a photo on Flickriver

💚 Notre première chasse aux aurores avec @amande.sen cette nuit-là. Pas trop de chance, il n'y avait pas beaucoup d'activité géomagnétique avec un indice Kp de 3 et même Kp2 en fin de nuit, le plus faible qu'on a pu avoir durant le road trip. Mais on ne va pas se plaindre. Les aurores sont un spectacle qu'on se doit de respecter. On se sent si petit face à la nature quand on voit ça, c'est… Indescriptible ! Le vivre à 2 rend le moment tellement unique.

❓ L'indice K (K-Index), et par extension l'indice Kp ("Planetary K-Index), sont utilisés pour exprimer la magnitude des tempêtes géomagnétiques. L'indice Kp est un excellent indicateur parmi les plus couramment utilisés pour indiquer la gravité des perturbations magnétiques mondiales dans l’espace proche de la Terre.

L'échelle Kp débute à 0 et termine à 9. A 1, tout est calme. De 5 à 9, cela indique la présence d'une tempête géomagnétique. En pratique, cette échelle une fois reportée sur une carte permet de visualiser d'où seront (peut-être) visibles les aurores en fonction de leur magnitude. D'autres indicateurs existent et permettent d'approfondir le sujet. Ces données proviennent notamment de satellites placés en orbite sur le point de Lagrange L1 (DSCOVR est l'un des plus connus).

Ici l'indice Kp a varié entre 2 et 3 ce qui indique une activité plutôt faible. Ce qui explique que depuis notre position au sud-est de l'Islande, on voyait l'oval auroral très loin sur l'horizon.
