A glimpse of old Vienna. - a photo on Flickriver

Vienna, a city where small shops and trades-men's premises could be door-to-door with the Emperor!

When I came to Vienna in the 1970s, the First District was still full of small businesses, many of them plying locally-crafted specialties. In the last thirty years there has been a gradual but accelerating change, so that now the main streets are dominated by major international brands. Never-the-less, there are corners where one can still capture the atmosphere of times-gone-by, as here, where a trades-man's sign hangs near the entrance to the Imperial Palace.

Above the sign is the Austrian Imperial double-headed eagle - you can see it if you zoom right in. 
In the background is the "New Gate" ("Neutor") of the Imperial Court Palace ("Hofburg").  (View from Michaelerplatz - just a few steps behind me is Demel's famous café and cake-shop.)

Camera jpg converted to black & white in SilkyPix Developer Studio Pro 9 using sliders for the toning of individual colours - mainly for blue (sky) and yellow (gold), but also green and turquoise for the copper roof of the dome.
