1989, Oct interview pic with St Paul Pioneer Press/ Sunday newspaper

            It was the summer of 1978... ten years since I had hired out on "the Milwaukee Road" in La Crosse Wisconsin and by now I had 11 years service on "the Burlington Northern" or as I would sometimes say on "the Great Northern Pacific". Some would say that it was "the Great Northern... (Pacific)" and some would say that it was "the (Great)... Northern Pacific". But I was a Milwaukee Road man and to me it was simply "the GNP". It was unlike the old strong arm lever interlocking towers that I had known on the  joint double track on the Milwaukee and the Burlington east between St Paul Minnesota and St Croix Tower.  

Thanks to my friend Bob Anderson who has always been like a brother to me I was now NOT only "out of the Navy" but back "working on the railroad" in the home and the land that I love. I was happy and life was good and I knew NOT yet "the whirlwind" that would come in 1995 and take us all away to a place far from the home and the land that we loved. 

It was still "Time Tables and Train Orders" with schedules meets and orders that read "has right over opposing trains" with a few "run late" orders that changed the schedule of "a regular train" thus helping an extra or a local to advance when they other wise would NOT be able to do so. 

I hardly ever talked on the radio and "low and behold" if the dispatcher ever personally called you on the radio. 
It was something that I enjoyed very much but like the old interlocking towers of which my beloved "Hoffman Avenue" was 78 years old when I started working there in the summer of 1968 these things would one day soon be gone and so would we... taken to a place that many of us wished NOT to go.
