Laatste rondje

            In Leuven wordt momenteel een deel van de seininrichting vernieuwd. Voor mijn job kom ik daar dan ook regelmatig en steekt het toch een beetje om de oude draaischijf na de sloop van de museumbewaarplaats nutteloos te zien liggen.

In 2007 was het nog anders: toen stond de bewaarplaats nog vol met stoomlocomotieven en andere pronkstukken uit de collectie van het toenmalige historisch patrimonium van de NMBS. Voor een tentoonstelling tijdens het trein-tram-busweekend zou de 12.004 naar Brussel-Zuid worden getransporteerd, maar ze diende daarvoor te worden gedraaid. De 5166 kwam hiervoor van Antwerpen-Noord naar de studentenstad om via de sporendriehoek ten noorden van Leuven de niet meer rijvaardige ‘Atlantic’ te draaien. Onder de radar gebruikten de treinbestuurders van depot Leuven de draaischijf echter geregeld om een 77 te draaien, zodat die locomotieven met de korte neus vooraan in de juiste richting stonden. Toen ik de treinbestuurder van de 5166 daarover tipte, wilde hij het pas geloven nadat enkele treinbestuurders van Leuven het verhaal bevestigden. En zo werd er op 12 september 2007 (wellicht voor de allerlaatste keer?) een stoomlocomotief gedraaid op de draaischijf van Leuven… Als dank voor de tip mocht ik rustig mijn foto’s maken alvorens de locomotief weer van de draaischijf werd gerangeerd 😊

In Leuven, part of the signalling system is currently being renewed. For my job, I regularly visit Leuven and it stings a bit to see the old turntable lying useless after the demolition of the museum depot.

It was a whole different situation in 2007, when the depot was still full of steam locomotives and other masterpieces from the collection of the then called ‘historical patrimony’ of our national railways. For an exhibition during the annual ‘train-tram-bus weekend’, the 12,004 was to be transported to Brussels-South, but it had to be turned for this exhibition. For this purpose, the 5166 came from Antwerp-North to the university town to turn the no longer roadworthy ‘Atlantic’ via the track triangle north of Leuven. However, under the radar, train drivers from depot Leuven regularly used the turntable to turn diesel engines of the 77-series, so that those locomotives were in the right direction with the short nose in front. When I tipped the driver of the 5166 about this, he did not want to believe it until some train drivers from Leuven confirmed the story. And so, on 12 September 2007, a steam locomotive was turned (probably for the very last time?) on the Leuven turntable... To thank me for the tip, I was allowed to take my photos calmly before the locomotive was shunted off the turntable again 😊
