This lovely Yellow Magnolia is grown in my neighbour’s garden.
The genus Magnolia, with 80 or so species, is represented in both Asia and Eastern North America. They are among the most primitive of flowering plants, fossils have been found in rocks from the Cretaceous period (144-65 million years ago). Their simple shape, thick petals, and rigid anthers, together with a powerful scent are adapted to pollination by beetles, whose blundering flight may be similar to that of the earliest insects. Most familiar are those with flowers stained pinkish-purple on the outside and white internally, but there are pure white and dark pink clones as well. Considered hrdy to -20 F (-29C), and flowers in early spring often covering the otherwise naked tree with innumerable flowers.
