Where 'Falls of Halladale' Fell (See Comment Image)

West of Peterborough, on The Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia. 

There is nothing remarkable about this photograph except for the old photograph within it. That has been much reproduced, but unfortunately, usually in cropped form. (The full frame is shown in the comments).

Scores of vessels, mainly of the sailing era, have been lost on this 'Shipwreck Coast'. Usually, the treachery of the sea and weather sufficed, but in the case of this impressive four-masted barque, 'Falls of Halladale', it seems that incompetence was the main cause when, having left New York bound for Melbourne and Sydney, the vessel ran aground in Bass Strait due to navigational error in thick fog on November 18, 1908.

It eventually disappeared beneath the waves. One day the ledge that provided the ignominious spectacle will suffer the same fate...
