Fortuity

            Mount Olympus, Olympic National Park, Washington

At 7930 feet/2430 meters, Mount Olympus is the highest peak in the Olympic range. Yet due to quirks of geography, it is one of the least visible and can only be seen from Hurricane Ridge and the Hurricane Hill trail or the top of other peaks nearby (unless of course one is making a summit climb of the mountain itself!) 

It is also located in the most precipitous area of Washington, with the Hoh Rain Forest at its base, and therefore is frequently shrouded in clouds. That precipitation however, since it usually falls as large quantities of snow in the winter, enables the mountain to support 6 glaciers, despite its relatively low elevation. Normally it would have much more snow cover than seen here - this has been a worryingly low snowpack year in the Olympic range.

Given the above factors, I felt very lucky to experience (and document in a very large number of photos lol) the rare sight of its craggy peaks in full view across the valley during my snowshoe trip last week.
