Archangel. From The Sacred Isle Series.

You asked me
What would it be like to meet an Archangel
One of God’s Warriors
And I wondered would we survive the experience
Being placed near God’s right hand
In the presence of an eternal soldier
Deciding our fate
Maybe with a gesture
An arched eyebrow
An agitated wing span
I suspect there would be an indulgent impatience
Of dealing with lowly creatures
That show repeated defiance
In spite of the infinite patience of their master
It would be easier to smite us into oblivion
But that is not the ultimate plan
One that the Angels have to adhere to
Despite their personal frustration
But occasionally compassion arises
And intervention is not unknown
The path of the universe is a rocky one
There is this element of chance within it
A safety net
In case things come totally undone
A seed may be planted
But what grows might surprise everyone
This is the beauty of creation
Of letting things flow
Despite the bad choices of His earthly children
The Archangels know
His will has to be done
In heaven as well as below

On a recent visit to look through this selection of poems and images in this series as I was working on them, my friend Roger wondered what it would be like to meet an Archangel, as opposed to a lesser rank Angel, such as the Guardian Angels we often associate ourselves with, when we ask for help or protection.

We wondered whether you would survive the experience…as I should imagine that the appearance of an Archangel, such as Gabriel for instance, is not an everyday occurrence as we know from his visitation to Mary. Paintings depict him as a human form appearing to her, but whether he actually did ‘in person’ is open to debate. Probably in their real form it would be too overwhelming for us to even tolerate.

Archangels only make themselves known when something of world-changing import is to be imparted, some knowledge that this world needs to know about and therefore act upon.

Visitations from Angels are few and far between in the Bible as far as I am aware…but Roger’s comment got me thinking…perhaps there was room for another poem in this series, so I looked through the images again…and “Archangel” was the result.
