            While Leica can claim credit for starting the 35 mm film revolution, it was Nikon that kicked off the world of the Single Lens Reflex. It was the Nikon F that put the PRO in professional 35 mm cameras and the Nikon F Photomic FTN seen here was the last of this model. It featured interchangeable finders, focus screens and backs. It was incredibly durable and photographed wars, the Olympics, the Space Race and other world events.

In 1969 I was a very fortunate High School Junior who lucked out and got a brand new,  just released Photomic FTN and Nikon 50 mm f/1.4 lens for "just" $230 ($1610 in 2020 - half the MSRP of $460/3220) thanks to a US Air Force crew member making frequent trips back and forth to Japan.

I carried that camera everywhere and shot our HS basketball games, yearbook photos, backpacking trips and rock and ice climbing adventures. I documented our travels in Europe and the lives of our two boys growing up. I added extra lenses along the way and supplemented it first with a Nikkormat FTN and later a pair of smaller Nikons, an FM and FE, with their compact MD-12 motor drives. 

It's all gone now; sold off last year for pennies on the dollar. I kept this body and a single Nikon 35mm f/2 AI-S lens (the original 50 mm f/1.4 was stolen in 1982).

And it still works!

In the next few weeks I hope to post some images shot with this camera and other Nikon film gear.

Strobist Info: Single 440 W/S Novatron strobe fired through a Larson 27" Softbox directly overhead and tilted slightly toward the camera. A 27" Larson Reflectasol was used directly underneath for fill, as was a white card held to camera right to fill in the edges somewhat.

I needed a polarizing filter on my Nikon 70-200 zoom to help reduce the amount of light on the subject. Even at the lowest setting the studio strobe was too powerful.
