184 Miles of Adventure (0494) - a photo on Flickriver

            That's the name of the hikers' guide to the C&O Canal towpath published by the Boy Scouts of America in 1970. We didn't ride the whole distance but did manage to cover 75 miles of the trail in three days of out and back bicycle riding totaling 150 miles.

The trail is uniquely qualified to support a relatively young family or fledgling long distance cyclist looking for an easy adventure. The trail is flat, linear and easy to follow (if you get lost on the C&O you probably should pick up a different outdoor activity). There are hiker-biker campsites every 5-7 miles that provide drinking water, a picnic table, fire ring and port-potty.

The C&O Canal was built between 1828 and 1850 in hopes of realizing huge monetary profits by reducing the costs of transporting raw goods from the Ohio River valley to Washington DC and manufactured goods back again. It follows the Potomac River from Cumberland to Georgetown and totals 184 miles. Unfortunately, while thousands of workers were laboriously digging this ditch by hand, tracks for the B&O Railroad were being laid along the same route, finishing 8 years ahead of the canal.

By the time the canal was finally completed it was already obsolete!
