Walton Lighthouse - in Explore - a photo on Flickriver

            The sun is ready to make an appearance in Santa Cruz, California.  Notice standing water near the lighthouse.  Those walking out along the jetty need to keep track of the tides in order to avoid being struck by one of the larger waves.  

One thing that is often confusing to visitors of Santa Cruz is the fact that the coast in this area runs east and west instead of north and south.  So the sun appears in the morning on the other side of Monterey Bay.

This jetty and lighthouse are located at the entrance to the Santa Cruz Harbor, protecting against the waves that were coming from the right when I was there.  Unfortunately a lot of sand still ends up in the harbor which must be dredged regularly to keep the channel from filling in.
