              As the Sol Union Navy expanded and modernized throughout the mid-24th century, it shifted away from a force built around large, specialized capital ships and instead turned toward building smaller, more well-rounded vessels with greater operational flexibility. 
    
       However, the Arthonid incursions of human space in multiple sectors demonstrated the need for a small core of more specialized ships. With most human cruisers too slow to catch Bug ships, and with insect breeding bases too heavily defended to assault without heavy casualties, the Navy sought a solution in a new ship type. 

      Olympus Industries, a Martian shipbuilding company, had the answer. They proposed a stealthy ship which could infiltrate a Bug Belt undetected, blast away the breeding grounds, then slip back out. The Navy liked the idea and thus construction began on the first ships designed & built entirely on Mars to be accepted into the United Navy. 

        The Marineris class is built around its signature Stealth Capsule Module. The SCM shields the ship from prying eyes by manipulating gravity around the ship so that light both bends and passes through, rendering it invisible. The SCM also eliminated the gravitational pull and magnetic signature of the hull, with other stealth materials negating other forms of detection. 

   All this comes at a cost, however, as the SCM requires a monumental amount of energy, leaving little for shielding or propulsion. This leaves the Marineris extremely vulnerable if detected, as well as one of the slowest ship types in the galaxy in sub-light. 

       The Marineris is equipped with a plethora of large caliber guns, much more so than any other ship its size. This is due to the fact that its doctrine is to postion itself within an enemy stronghold, uncloak and unleash massive firepower, then quickly re-cloak and egress. 

     While only a small number were ever built, they were and continue to be extremely effective against a range of threats, not least the Arthonids, which have been purged from most human-held sectors. Many view the Marineris class as the prime anti-Bug ship type, earning it the fleet nickname of the Exterminator. Many worlds devastated by Bug attacks have monuments to this class, sometimes of the specific ship which rid that particular system of the Insect Menace. Examples include the SNS Ypres(SS-418), memorialized on Eden, the SNS Leone(SS-413) on Barbara, and the SNS Jamaica(SS-495) on New London, among others.
