La batalla de Iwo Jima, denominada en clave Operación Detachment, es el nombre que recibe uno de los combates más sangrientos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, librado en la isla de Iwo Jima entre los infantes de marina de los Estados Unidos y las fuerzas del ejército del Imperio del Japón de febrero a marzo de 1945, durante la Guerra del Pacífico.

The Battle of Iwo Jima, code-named Operation Detachment, is the name given to one of the bloodiest engagements of World War II, fought on the island of Iwo Jima between United States Marines and forces of the Army of the Empire of Japan in February and March 1945, during the Pacific War.

Louis R. Lowery (July 24, 1916 - April 15, 1987) was a captain in the United States Marine Corps. He was the only combat photographer to cover six major campaigns during World War II.
