North British class K 496 - a photo on Flickriver

            These Reid locomotives were the final development of his six foot driving wheel type. The first ten were built at Cowlairs. They were popular and versatile.
Originally designed for the formidable braes and curves of the West Highland route, they performed superbly until nationalisation when the LNER introduced surplus K2 2-6-0s to the line. However, the D34 continued to be noted on the line.The D34s were better at handling the severely graded and awkward curves than the K2s and proved very reliable despite this abuse on 190 ton trains.

The last D34 was withdrawn in 1959, although one, Glen Douglas, is at Bo'ness as a static exhibit. A very stylish locomotive!
