Coventry Presswork's - a photo on Flickriver

            Liberty Pressing Solutions (CovPress) was manufactured pressings, welded assemblies and chassis’ for the automotive industry, supplying the likes of JLR, Vauxhall & Renault.

The facility started life as the Coventry Radiator and Presswork Company in 1890 and traded under the Coventry Presswork banner following a management buyout in 1987.

The French group Lebranchu acquired Coventry Presswork in 1991. The company then became a subsidiary of Sofedit SA in 1994 and renamed to Sofedit UK in 2001. The business became known as CovPress Holdings Ltd in 2005. Sofedit UK fell into administration in 2017.

Liberty Holdings recused CovPress, and a major re-structuring took place, with the business splitting into two sectors: Liberty Pressing Solutions and Liberty Aluminium Technologies.

2021, concerns were raised as the structural long-term downturn in the UK automotive market started to take hold, forcing the business to find work elsewhere, such as in aerospace and special alloys steel business. Later that year, Liberty’s main backer (Greensill Capital) collapsed in March of that year, forcing it to sell off parts of the global company, Liberty included).

January 2023, Liberty announced the site would close its gates for good, failing to find a buyer for the business. The workforce had diminished in 2 years from 200 employees to just 30.

A Liberty spokesperson confirmed: “The works has been losing work for a number of years, mostly on a ‘price basis’. The remaining customers decided that it was a risk to their business when they had been asked to increase their prices. So as a result, they took their business elsewhere and that's what has resulted in the closure of the site. "
