Imperial Waterways of Russia: Cruise map

            In the latter part of August 2013, Huguette and I had the good fortune of sailing the Imperial Waterways of Russia on Uniworld river boat River Victoria.  The cruise began with a three-day visit of Moscow (see previous set) followed by a six-day boat ride along the rivers, canals and lakes that link Moscow to St. Petersburg (this set) and ended with a three-day sightseeing tour of St. Petersburg (to be presented in the next set).  Most of this 1600 km navigational system was opened by Peter the Great in the early 18th century at the time that he founded the city of St. Petersburg and made it the Imperial Capital.   

The map above sketches the route that we followed – in red – with the location of all the stops that we made along the way – white dots – and the names of the principal physiographic features that make up the waterways.  The following is a brief summary of our journey: 

Day 1: Sail the Moscow Canal that links Moscow to the Volga River (128 km); enter the Volga at Dubna;
Day 2: Continue sailing the Volga to Uglich, an historical town of 34,000 founded in the 12th century. Visit the Uglich Kremlin and several churches and cathedral; continue sailing the Volga towards Yaroslavl; 
Day 3: Arrive at Yaroslavl (pop. 600,000), World Heritage Site and one of the Golden Ring cities founded in 1010; city tour and visit to main sites; walk along the beautiful river embankment; 
Day 4: Backtrack on the Volga to Lake Rybinsk; sail across the lake towards Goritsy on the Sheksna River; from Goritsy, travel by bus to Kirillov to visit the town and witness the way of life in this remote part of Russia; visit the famous Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery; continue sailing towards Lake Onega and Kizhi Island;
Day 5: Sail along the Kovzha River and Vytegra Canal and across Lake Onega to Kizhi Island; visit Kizhi Island World Heritage site; sail the scenic Svir River towards Mandrogi;
Day 6: Visit the artisan village of Mandrogi and take part in a BBQ picnic lunch ashore; continue sailing the Svir River, cross Lake Ladoga, Europe's largest lake and continue along the Neva River; arrive in St. Petersburg early next morning.  

As you can see, this was a busy program especially when meals, entertainment, lectures and sleeping is added to the mix.  Much of the sailing was done during the dark hours, but not all of it; there were plenty of opportunities to take pictures from the ship's decks as we sailed in daylight through the northern Russia countryside.
