Geological Map, MacInnis Lake - a photo on Flickriver

            Geologists use geological maps to guide them in their work.  This geological map of the MacInnis Lake region was compiled specifically for this project.  It shows the location of the pink arkose (in green), the rock formation that contains the black heavy mineral bands shown in the previous photograph.  The numbers 1 to 17 represent places where such black bands have been reported within the pink arkose and that we wanted to study in this project.  All these rocks are very old.  The Nonacho Group rocks (see legend) are between 1.7 and 2.5 billion years old.  The granitic basement rocks – all the pink on this map – are older than 2.5 billion years which makes them amongst the oldest rocks in Canada.  Considering that the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old and that everything was in a state of flux for the first billion years of the Earth's existence, 2.5 billion years is pretty old indeed.  Some rocks in the Canadian Shield have been dated at 3.0 and even 3.5 or 3.6 billion years, but rocks that old a very uncommon.
