White-winged Crossbill - a photo on Flickriver

White-winged Crossbills with lower mandibles crossing to the right are approximately three times more common than those with lower mandibles crossing to the left. This unique behavior is a result of their specialized bill structure, which is uniquely adapted to efficiently extract seeds from conifer cones. Their crossed mandibles act like a pair of tweezers, allowing them to grasp and extract seeds with precision.
White-winged Crossbills, the jewels of the northern woods, are not just solitary feeders. They often make their presence known as a lively, chattering flock, gracefully moving between spruce trees. This social flocking behavior, with its charming mix of rose-pink males, greenish females, and immatures, is a testament to their strong social bonds, making us feel a part of their world.
