American red squirrel - a photo on Flickriver

            Squirrels demonstrate a remarkably unique sleeping habit that captivates the imagination. They possess the incredible ability to nap while standing, often with their eyes wide open, especially during the day after a restless night. This fascinating behavior not only allows them to catch some much-needed rest but also keeps them vigilant against potential threats, highlighting the extraordinary adaptations of the natural world.

Yet, I once witnessed a squirrel that seemed to defy this instinctive behavior. Rather than enduring the biting cold outside, it appeared to yearn for the comfort of warmth indoors, cozying up by our wood stove. It served as a striking reminder of how even the most alert creatures occasionally crave a touch of comfort and warmth.
