Slavka River in Slavsko - a photo on Flickriver

            Slavka is a river in the Ukrainian Carpathians, flowing near the village of Slavsko. It is a right tributary of the Opor (Dniester basin). Its length is 15 km.
This river also has its own legend.
"The Tatars attacked our village. They burned the village. Some people were killed, and others were tied up and driven into captivity. They also captured a very beautiful girl, Slavka. They took her to the village of Yalinkuvate. Slavka turned around, looked at her mountains and said to the Tatars: "I will not go any further, because I cannot live without my mountains and streams. I would rather die here." The prisoners murmured, getting up from the ground and approaching the girl. They did not seem to hear the blows of the Tatar whips. But suddenly a cross-eyed Tatar ran up with a face twisted with rage, swung his saber with all his strength, and the girl's head rolled away, sprinkling bloody dew on her native land. The prisoners cried. It became dark outside, it started to rain, and from the girl's head, her hair, washed by rainwater, stretched out in a wavy tuft into the valley to where the village was. A blinding flash of lightning was reflected in the girl's eyes, blue as the fair Carpathian sky, and a terrible clap of thunder struck, so that the earth trembled and the mountains groaned... Where the Tatar who had killed the girl had stood, only a stone remained. And from the place where the girl's head lay, from a deep hole, a stream murmured in a winding strip, like a girl's unbraided braid. Gathering his little brothers and sisters - Shaleny and Reshitsky, Mala Slavka and Khashchovansky, Gabiyovo and Gurdzansky, Pavlyukivsky and Bylnovy, Topilsky and Poharsky (these are the streams that flow into our river), he soon grew into a river that carried its waters to brother Opor, to unite with him and with its waves wash away the enemy evil from their native land. And people called that river Slavka.
