Fine Art Long Exposure View of Beached Boats in Boat Graveyard, Pin Mill, Chelmondiston, Suffolk

            The funny thing is that my wife's sister lives about 3 miles past this location. I have lost count of how many times we have visited since the turn of the century and never knew this place existed. It was only while scouting locations for our week away near here that I came across it.

This is another fine art edited view of some abandoned boats in what is known as the 'boat graveyard'. I arrived early as the tide was still out and took some images. I then took some long exposure shots of 6 minutes each using a ten stop together with a three stop filter after the tide had come in to get the effect of very smooth water. In post, I removed all of the 'debris', boats on the river and the far shoreline and tried to blend the horizon, leaving the colour in the boats themselves. This is my second attempt and, although a lot of work, I am quite pleased with the result.

Pin Mill is a hamlet on the south bank of the tidal River Orwell, on the outskirts of the village of Chelmondiston, Suffolk. It lies within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is a designated Conservation Area. It is now generally known for the historic Butt and Oyster public house, and for sailing.

The expression "pin mill" means a pin factory, and also a word for a wheel with projecting pins used in leather production. Neither of these activities are known to have taken place at Pin Mill.

Pin Mill was once a busy landing point for ship-borne cargo, a centre for the repair of Thames sailing barges and home to many small industries such as sail making, a maltings (now a workshop) and a brickyard. The east coast has a long history of smuggling, in which Pin Mill and the Butt and Oyster pub allegedly played key parts.
