Tyntesfield Chapel (dedicated to St Joseph)

Following the completion of Tyntesfield House, William Gibbs commissioned this private chapel between 1873 and 1875, designed by Sir Arthur Blomfield and inspired by Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.

The chapel was dedicated to St Joseph (the husband of the Virgin Mary), serving as a spiritual focus for the family rather than a public church. It was licensed for family services, used daily for prayers, yet never consecrated.

William and his son Antony appointed household chaplains to conduct services. Daily prayer formed an integral part of life at Tyntesfield, although the chapel remained unconsecrated due to opposition from the local vicar and patron, which led the bishop to withhold formal sanction.

The chapel, along with the house and service buildings, holds Grade I listed status in recognition of its architectural and historical significance.
