Port Eliot is the ancient, Grade I-listed ancestral seat of the Eliot family, the Earls of St Germans, and one of the oldest buildings in continuous habitation in the UK, dating back to a 5th-century church founded by St Germanus of Auxerre. The house's core incorporates the monastic buildings of an Augustinian Priory that was dissolved in 1539.

The structure was dramatically transformed in the early 19th-century by the renowned architect Sir John Soane (1804–1806), who remodelled the house and created iconic spaces like The Round Room (known for its superb mural by 20th-century artist Robert Lenkiewicz). Soane's design, which tunnelled out and unified the medieval warren of spaces, is often considered one of his best works.

The house is set within a vast, 6,000-acre estate, with landscaped gardens and a park created by the famous 18th-century designer Humphry Repton (documented in his Red Book of 1793). The park features historic follies like the Battery and offers views of the River Tiddy estuary and the colossal St Germans Railway Viaduct.

The house remains a private family home, offering public tours and hosting arts and culture events.
