The DC-10 series 40 was basically a long range verion of the DC-10-30, but sporting Pratt & Whitney engines in place of the GE motors, however the only customers of this version remained Northwest Orient and Japan Airlines, who ordered 22 and 20 aircraft, respectively.

N159US was one of the 22, and built and delivered to Northwest Orient in 1974. It was seen on finals to runway 34R at SeaTac airport, two days after hosting me on a flight from Anchorage to Seattle. Interestingly all of America was celebrating their National Day on the 4th of July, and I experienced an almost empty aircraft - with a top service from the flight attendants who were clearly under-employed on the three hour flight.

N159US continued service with Northwest Orient, who became Northwest Airlines in October 1986. In July 2002 the DC-10 was retired and stored at Aberdeen-Phillips AAF, where it was eventually scrapped.
