Someone I know came here last year and supposedly got this shot. But he was frustrated because when he returned to the states he claimed the photo was gone. So the intrusive thoughts were too tempting when I realized I had the chance to swing by here when I took my own journey to Japan.
It was still the very early morning at Nanzenji, no one else was there and it was frost cold (AKA perfect conditions). Got carried away with the temple itself before eventually finding the infamous aqueduct. I've seen tunnel shots like this before at ruins in the southwest and forts in the east, but this is the only one I've seen in Japan and it was well kept (though I guess that's no surprise). There were small puddles on one far end and I tried to get the reflection in. Looking back at the shots, not only did I not do that perfectly, but my camera was not in the right place (I went handheld and pocket tripod).
But what I did get was a standard architecture shot, which did the job just fine. The original shot had a little too much blue, which doesn't look good on bricks. So I tried to make it look like the sun was much higher then it was in editing. Exposure, clarity, and temperature are up, and there's a slight green tint. The image looks a bit more positive now while still retaining an old look. It's impressive really, this thing was built in 1868 and despite it's age and weathered look, it's still very much in use.
