Cradle allegedly used by Countess of Mar for James VI

            Sixteenth-century cradle, alleged to have belonged to Annabella Erskine, Countess of Mar. The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

The museum’s label for the item states it belonged to ‘Annabella Drummond, countess of Mar’, though it was Annabella Erskine (née Murray), who cared for James VI during his infancy. James was crowned king in 1567, aged thirteen months old, and naturally spent his first years in the royal nursery. In November 1572 parliament declared that James should remain ‘under the nutriture of my said lady the countess of Mar his governant’. This cradle (along with a nursing chair also in the museum), is alleged to have been used by the countess for the royal infant. The countess’s husband, John Erskine, earl of Mar, was briefly regent of Scotland from 1571-2.

The countess evidently performed her duty well for in 1574 James appointed her to care for his eldest son, Prince Henry. The countess, who had been good friends with Mary, Queen of Scots, was a devout Catholic. She died just prior to James becoming King of England.
