            Gare Marítima de Alcântara / Alcântara Maritime Station

Os painéis das Gares Marítimas de Alcântara e da Rocha Conde de Óbidos são duas das obras mais emblemáticas do artista modernista português José de Almada Negreiros (1893-1970). Foram concebidos entre as décadas de 1930 e 1940.
As gares foram projetadas pelo arquiteto Porfírio Pardal Monteiro (1897-1957) e Almada Negreiros foi convidado a realizar a decoração mural das mesmas.
Os paineis da Gare Marítima de Alcântara foram realizados entre 1943 e 1945, e exaltam o mar, as descobertas portuguesas, a navegação e o mundo ultramarino, com referências simbólicas à epopeia dos Descobrimentos e à relação de Portugal com o mar.
Graças à mobilização de especialistas em arte, arquitetos, historiadores e figuras públicas, bem como ao crescente reconhecimento da importância de Almada Negreiros como figura central do modernismo português, os painéis foram salvos da destruição e restaurados (2024).

The panels of the Alcântara and Rocha Conde de Óbidos Maritime Stations are two of the most emblematic works by the Portuguese modernist artist José de Almada Negreiros. (1893-1970) They were designed between the 1930s and 1940s.
The stations were designed by the architect Porfírio Pardal Monteiro (1897-1957) and Almada Negreiros was invited to create the mural decorations for them.
The panels at Alcântara Maritime Station were created between 1943 and 1945, and extol the sea, the Portuguese discoveries, navigation and the overseas world, with symbolic references to the epic of the Discoveries and Portugal's relationship with the sea.
Thanks to the mobilization of art experts, architects, historians and public figures, as well as the growing recognition of the importance of Almada Negreiros as a central figure of Portuguese modernism, the panels were saved from destruction and restored (2024).
