the temptation of Eve - a photo on Flickriver

            This column capital shows Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, standing by the Tree of Knowledge.  The serpent is tempting Eve to eat a fruit from the tree.

This is one of the many examples of Norman high relief sculpture on the capitals of the columns which support the passageway running around the cloister of the Cathedral in Monreale, near Palermo in Sicily.

Monreale is a Norman cathedral, begun in 1174 by William II of Sicily.  The cloister was completed in about 1200 and is famous for the decorative patterned geometrical carving ('diaper work') and the mosaics on its columns, as well as the high relief sculptures on its column capitals which include Biblical scenes like this one, as well as foliage and allegories.
