bald eagle from US Consulate in Liverpool

            This gilded carving of a bald eagle with the inscription 'E Pluribus Unum' along its base used to adorn the facade of the United States' first consulate in the UK which was in Liverpool (because that was the main port linking the two countries).

It is on display in the Museum of Liverpool.

It dates back to  1790, only very shortly after the US became independent.  The consulate building, on Paradise Street, is still standing but now houses a restaurant (and displays a replica of the eagle sculpture).
