mediaeval carving of two Evangelists

            This picture shows a detail from a funerary monument to Saints Vicente, Sabina & Cristeta in the Romanesque church of San Vicente in Avila, in the Spainsh region of Castilla y Leon.

Here we see two of the Evangelists holding their gospels.

The monument or cenotaph was created in the second half of the 12th century and is richly carved with the story of the martyrdom of the three siblings.  It also has many other scenes from the Bible.  These all retain their original coloured paint.
