            The Palacio de la Conquista is a 16th century palace in Trujillo, a town in the Spanish region of Extremadura.  It was built for Hernando Pizarro, a conquistador and half-brother of the more famous Francisco Pizarro, on the site of their father's former 15th century palace.

Its facade is decorated with renaissance plateresque carvings including the portrait busts seen here: Hernando Pizarro and his half-Incan, half-Spanish wife Francisca Pizarro Yupanqui.  It is thought this may be the earliest example of a portrait sculpture of a mixed race ('mestiza') person in Spain.

Francisca was the daughter of Francisco Pizarro and his Incan mistress Ines Yupanqui, which means her husband Hernando was also her uncle.  They lived in this palace.

These two busts are on the left hand side of the impressive corner balcony which faces onto the Plaza Mayor.  There are two matching busts, of Francisco and Ines, on the other side.

Unlike Francisco Pizarro who was eventually murdered in Peru as a result of a bitter feud with rival conquistadors, Hernando lived out his days in Trujillo, reaching the remarkable age of 100 before dying of old age.
