Palacio de la Conquista: detail of Pizarro coat-of-arms

            The Palacio de la Conquista is a 16th century palace in Trujillo, a town in the Spanish region of Extremadura.  It was built for Hernando Pizarro, a conquistador and half-brother of the more famous Francisco Pizarro, on the site of their father's former 15th century palace.

Its facade is decorated with renaissance plateresque carvings including the complex coat-of-arms seen here, which straddles both sides of the corner balcony.  This coat-of-arms was granted to Pizarro in 1537 by Carlos V in recognition of his conquest of Peru.

Most interesting is the group of men on the right hand side.  At the centre is Incan chief Atahualpa, who was defeated by Francisco Pizarro: he is in chains and has both his hands lowered into chests, no doubt signifying the Incan treasure that Pizarro plundered.  In a ring around him are other Incan men, also in chains.

The Latin inscription running around the top left-hand part of the image reads "Caroli Cesaris auspitio et labore ingemos ac impesa duas Pizarro inventa et pecata".

Unlike Francisco Pizarro who was eventually murdered in Peru as a result of a bitter feud with rival conquistadors, Hernando lived out his days in Trujillo, reaching the remarkable age of 100 before dying of old age.
