            Detail of one of the many relief carvings on the Arch of Constantine in Rome.

The roundels are said to date from the time of Hadrian (almost 200 years before Constantine) and depict a boar hunt and a sacrifice to Apollo. It has been suggested that the arch actually pre-dates Constantine and may have originally been built for Hadrian.

The frieze beneath is from the time of Constantine and shows him speaking to the Roman citizens in the Forum after he defeated Maxentius and conquered the city in AD 312. (This victory is what the arch is intended to celebrate.)
