Monument to Robert †1728 and Margarita †1726 Scales. Marble. Centre of North Aisle.

The Latin inscription is set between Corinthian pilasters, framed by decorative consoles, supporting an open pediment. Above a putto stands pointing his trumpet towards the organ at the west end. The bottom is framed by large egg and dart above a floral panel and the head of a winged angel. The inscription notes that the trumpeting putto was placed there as a reminder of Robert Scales’s contribution of £100 pounds to the construction of the organ, adding that his benefactions included gifts for the maintenance of the organ, the post of organist, for the clergy and for ten boys to be taught Latin. His generosity is all the more remarkable since he died aged twenty nine, while his wife was only twenty one at her death, presumably in child birth.
