Lady's Slipper Garden - a photo on Flickriver

Years ago, there was a place in the Smokies where one could find numerous pink ladies slippers. The old-timers in these parts refer to them as “Pinks.” Due to the potential for poaching, those who know where they are generally keep it to themselves, only sharing with people who can be trusted to not harm them. The feral hogs in the Park, however, have their own designs on them, and that is thought to be one of the reasons for their decline. They depend on a delicate symbiotic relationship with a fungus that only grown in certain places, and that is an issue, and the acid rain that has affected the Park may have had an effect as well. Changes in climate have been pretty pronounced around here, and perhaps that is a factor. Whatever the reasons, they are greatly diminished in number in recent years. This shot is from about eight years ago. One has not turned all the way pink, and the other has not fully developed. It will be a couple weeks yet before they are up this year, and I am hoping for a bumper crop. We’ll see.
