CN M314 Torrance

            To round out the month of November, mama nature decided to dump between 25-50 cm of snow on Muskoka and the surrounding region, prompting local municipalities, namely Bracebridge, Huntsville, and Parry Sound, to release severe weather advisories, and to begin the process of clearing snow from roads into town.

We had a feeling of hope and excitement about getting some trains in some decent snow up north, but it did not set in until we got north of Barrie on the 400 and the change was nearly instantaneous, as two driveable lanes became one, and our range of vision was halved due to the worsening whiteout conditions.

Despite the challenges put forth, we made good on our attempt to bag some choo-choo's dashing through the snow... Our main goal for the day was to grab the CP Holiday Train through the wilderness, which we managed to catch through a rock cut in Bala. Before that, we tried to beat CP intermodal no.119 to Bala after hearing the crew report hitting a tree a number of miles outside town over the radio, but came up short and by the time we got trackside, he had keyed up the mic calling on Mactier.

However, in between our stabs at the Mactier Sub, we managed to grab two CN southbounds kicking up powder at Torrance, just outside Bala proper, on the subdivision of the same name. Here is the latter of the two, CN train M314, seen here rounding a large S curve, hogger blowing a horn sequence for the highway 169 level crossing.
