Portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Duchemin of Poissy (copy of a daguerreotype)

Coeulte is one of the few daguerreotypists to use a signature-hallmark on his plates in the later 1840s and the 1850s; this hallmark is discernible in the copy, allowing for a secure attribution of the daguerreotype.

The sitters are identified on the back of the CDV as "Mr et Mme Duchemin de Poissy". A genealogical research matches them with Jacques François Duchemin (1818-1879), lemonade maker (!) and Antoinette Adèle Duchemin, née Huchon (1821-1896), married in Poissy on October 4th, 1844. Coeulte kept a permanent studio in Paris, while also travelling to other provinces (notably Lorraine in the 1840s and 50s). Since Poissy is a town in Île-de-France, some 20 km from Paris, the daguerreotype was likely taken in Coeulte's Parisian studio.
