            The Needles Lighthouse - Isle of Wight

The 10 storey high lighthouse on the incredibly dangerous chalk peninsula on the western end of the Isle of Wight. The chalk cliffs are being worn away by the constant battering of the Solent sea and winds.
There is a helicopter pad on the roof of the lighthouse as it is very dangerous to approach from the sea.

Background information by Chris Sargeant:-
"The helipad was put on in 1979 by a company called Non corrosive metal products Ltd, West Drayton, Middlesex. it was built for Trinity House; the lighthouse people. We did a trial assembly in our Horton Road premises, it was sent by boat to the site and lifted onto a steel cage, which was newly erected around the lightroom. My job was to coordinate the manufacture and liaise with client. 

The aluminium planklets are 25cm deep and wide, 6 meters long, cut to suit and fastened to the steel cage, using stainless steel nut and bolt fixings. the planks are modular with a tongue and groove and are sealed with mastic making a very safe sealed yet live platform.
 Our helidecks went all over the world, we made them with hydraulics too, so they could be retracted in roof or moved to safety in areas like tall buildings in Hong Kong where hurricanes are common. We put our decks on merchant shipping needed for Falkland conflict, turning around 250 tonnes of varying steels and alloys in 7 days. My boss said it wasn't possible as our power supply was inadequate... But 10 x 56 KVA mobile generators, topped up the power supply. 

A new 16 year old boy In between tea breaks for the welders and fabricators, topped up the generators with diesel, over a day and night shift the boys brother is also taken on."
