            1973 Britain's EEC Commemorative coin.

In 1972 there were 6 members of the European Economic Community. Belgium; France; Italy; Luxembourg; West Germany; Netherlands.

In 1973, Britain, Ireland and Denmark joined making 9 members of the EEC.

This British 50 pence coin was produced to commemorate our joining as part of the "Fanfare for Europe" campaign, each linked hand representing the 9 full members.

This was the first commemorative coin since Britain adopted the decimal form of currency.

Membership applications by the UK to join the EEC were refused in 1963 and 1967 because the French President of the time, Charles de Gaulle, doubted the UK's political will and determination to see things through.
