F-104A / NF-104 Starfighter, U. S. Air Force (56-0760), Edwards Air Force Base, California

            The NF-104 aircraft on display at Edwards Air Force Base is a composite of several different F-104s that were convert to NF-104As. The designation NF indicate the aircraft was a permanent special test aircraft.   The NF-104 was a mixed power, high-performance, supersonic aerospace trainer that served as a low-cost astronaut training vehicle at the Air Force Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base. The modified Starfighter had a 6,000-pound thrust rocket mounted in the tail. The plane could reach altitude up to 120,000 feet. The famous test pilot Charles (Chuck) Yeager, who also served as commandant of the Aerospace Research Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base , fought a an NF-104 through a 16-mile flat spin in 1963 before bailing out 6,000 feet above the Mojave Desert.
