YF-4E Phantom II, U. S. Air Force (65-0713), Edward Air Force Base, California

            The aircraft in photograph started out as a regular F-4D but was converted to an YF-4E for trails when the E variant was under development.   The Y designation indicate the aircraft was a prototype. During the initial design of the Phantom, several proposals had been considered for a cannon-armed version. In fact, the original F4-E proposal was designed around a quartet of 20mm cannons.  However the philosophy of the day was that the air-to-air missile was the wave of the future and that the internal gun was an obsolete holdover.  Consequently, all Phantoms to reach production had been armed exclusively with missiles.  But, the all-missile fighter had shown serious drawbacks in the air-to-air battles over Vietnam. What was still needed was an internal gun. 

The aircraft in the photograph, along with two others, was modified  and equipped to test guns and radar. It was developed as the full-up prototype for the F-4E Phantom II.  The aircraft became the lead for testing the F-4G "Wild Weasel. (Source: Edwards Air Force Base)
