Carrier- M973 Small Unit Support Vehicle (SUSV), U. S. Army, Fort Greely, Alaska

            The M973 Small Unit Support Vehicle was manufactured in Sweden. It is a one and 1/2-ton tracked cargo carrier consisting of two plastic reinforced, fiber-glass compartments each mounted on a chassis with twin solid rubber tracks. An articulated steering joint joins the cabs.  The U. S. Army received its first order of M973s in 1983. It was used to support infantry platoons and similar sized units during operations in Arctic and alpine regions. It is also adaptable to tropical environs.  It can be used as an all-terrain, amphibious, multi-role transport vehicle- variants are cargo carrier; command, control, and communications; ambulance; and flatbed. The M973's large track area exert a low ground pressure that allow the vehicle to travel over deep snow and soft ground which would be impassable to almost all other tracked and wheeled vehicles.
