B-17G Flying Fortress, U. S. Army Air Force; U. S. Air Force (44-6393), California, Riverside County, March Field Air Museum

            The B-17 Flying Fortress was the centerpiece of the allied air campaign in Europe during World War II. The four-engine heavy bomber carried 5,000 to 8,000 pound bomb load and had a up to thirteen .50 caliber machine guns for defensive purposes. On missions, B-17s flew in formations to take advantage of inter-locking fields of fire from the machine guns to drive off attacking interceptors.  The aircraft was equipped with precision Norden bombsights to drop bombs on targets. 

The aircraft in the photograph was converted to a VIP transport and never flew combat missions.  After the war it flew as a cargo transport in Bolivia. The aircraft went to March Field Air Museum in in 1980 and was restored to its original B17G bomber configuration in 1998.
