M109 Self Propelled Howitzer (155mm), U. S. Army, Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona

            The M109 is a Self-Propelled armored howitzer with a 155mm bore cannon that was introduced to the U. S. military in 1963 to replace the M44. The M109 is highly upgradable weapon from its original capabilities. Newer versions, M109A6 and the M109A7 are referred to as the Paladin and offer significant automation and advanced capabilities including fully autonomous battlefield mobility.  Operated by a crew of four, the M109 family is used as an indirect-fire support weapon by maneuver brigades of armored and mechanized infantry divisions. The range of a M109 howitzer depends on the model and the type of projectile it use. The earlier versions, M109A1–A4, have a maximum range of between 11.2 miles and 14.6 miles.  The newer versions, M109A5–A7 have a maximum range of between 13 miles and 19 miles.
