Wisconsin, Manitowoc, Manitowoc North Breakwater Lighthouse, Lake Michigan

            Lights have marked the entrance to the harbor of Manitowoc since 1840. The current North Breakwater Lighthouse was built in 1918 as Manitowoc evolved into a shipbuilding town.  The 52-foot-tall lighthouse has a concrete foundation.  The second story, smaller than the first, supports a cylindrical watch room surrounded by an open-air gallery. The cylindrical watch room is surmounted by the light. In 2009, the lighthouse was declared excess property by the Coast Guard and offered at no cost to eligible governmental agencies, non- profit corporations, and educational organizations under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. However, none of these entities were willing to take ownership of the lighthouse. Consequently, it was auctioned in 2010. The winning bidder assumed ownership and began restoration on the structure in 2011.
