Apparition at Knock 1879 - commemorative badge (1929?)

The Story of Knock began on the 21st August 1879, when at approximately eight o’clock in the evening, fifteen people from the village of Knock in County Mayo witnessed an apparition on the gable wall of their Parish Church. The apparition included visions of Our Lady, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, a Lamb and a cross on an altar.

Although the original church was replaced in 1976 by the Basilica of Our Lady Queen of Ireland, the original gable wall of the 1828 church on which the apparition appeared has been preserved and incorporated into the shrine. The shrine includes a white Carrara marble carving of Our Lady with St. John the Evangelist to her right and St. Joseph to her left with the Lamb placed in the centre of the chapel on an altar surrounded by angels. The scene replicates the apparition as described by the original fifteen witnesses and was sculpted in 1960 by Lorenzo Ferri of Rome.
