Madonna & Child statue - Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea.

A superb statue of the Madonna and Infant Jesus in the church of Mount St. Joseph Abbey, Roscrea. It is finely carved from solid wood (possibly lime wood) with wonderful expressions and is a full standing figure about 1 metre (40”) high. There is a fantastically detailed carving of a serpent at the Madonna’s feet but not visible in this picture.

The abbey is located about 2 ½ miles outside Roscrea town and was founded in 1878 by the Trappist Cistercian monks. In addition to the abbey, there is also a secondary boarding school run by the Cistercians.
