58-0787 F-106A Delta Dart - a photo on Flickriver

            NMUSAF, Dayton OH.  This is an F-106 with a tale to tell.

On February 2, 1970, during air combat practice, the aircraft entered a flat spin. The pilot, Gary Foust, attempted to recover, including by deploying the aircraft's drag chute.  However recovery proved to be impossible and Foust ejected.

The now-pilotless aircraft recovered itself from the spin and came smoothly to earth, coming to a halt in a snowy field near Big Sandy, Montana. 

The damage to the aircraft was minimal and after repairs it was returned to service.
