Rough Weather in Portsmouth - a photo on Flickriver

Apart from this awful day, the winter of 2014/2015 was regarded as relatively benign and quiet, especially when compared to the exceptionally stormy weather of the previous winter. Nevertheless the north of the UK bore the brunt of some significant storms in mid-December, mid-January and late February. Otherwise this was a fairly typical winter. In all three months the weather was mostly dominated by an Atlantic flow bringing a succession of low pressure systems and associated fronts, but there were spells of high pressure at the end of December and notably the first half of February. S

The UK mean temperature for winter was near average. The mean temperature was slightly above average for December, but near average for January and February, with anomalies of +0.5°C, +0.1°C and -0.1°C respectively.

The ship in the background is the MV Normandie which is a ferry operated by Brittany Ferries. She was built at Kværner Masa-Yards Turku New Shipyard in Finland and has been sailing for Brittany Ferries since 1992.

Following the success of the Bretagne, Brittany Ferries commissioned the Normandie in 1991 for the route between Portsmouth and Caen.

Named after the French region of the same name, it is decorated in traditional Norman style and colours, and features on-board facilities, including dining, shopping and live entertainment.

The runner braving the tempest is a member of Fareham Crusaders who are a friendly running club suitable for runners of all abilities, based at the Everyone Active Leisure Centre, Park Lane, Fareham.
