Keep out - the asbestos castle. - a photo on Flickriver

            Indeed once, because it was a beachside home it was someone's castle. Now the ominous words "Keep Out" on a makeshift sign on the front window underpin a change in fortunes. Until it was banned for use in new buildings and for repairs, asbestos fibre cement sheets were a favourite building material for both inside and outside Australian homes. And then, like the bare bones mineral itself, they discovered that breathing or otherwise ingesting the dust would possibly kill you and it was banned. It can still be found in older homes but breaking it open for renovations or repairs and releasing the microfibres of asbestos can be lethal. Working it or removing it now comes with many strict rules of engagement and disposal, many of which can be and are ignored at one's own peril. No doubt this old campaigner will eventually be reduced to dust and deadly shards before being buried, hopefully in an approved dump site.
